3 toughest trick shots in pool

tricks

There's something incredibly satisfying about nailing tricky pool shots. It takes time and practice to get the necessary skill, but once you're there you'll never forget how to sink those long range balls. In some ways it's kind of like a super power, but instead of saving the world you'll simply be impressing anybody fortunate enough to watch you pick up a cue.

In terms of which moves actually hold the key to dropping jaws and setting passions ablaze, there are quite a few to choose from. The great thing about pool is how simple it is, which leaves a lot of room for you to apply little touches of flair to each stroke. Let's take a look at three of the most impressive trick shots that should be in you arsenal.

1. Behind the back

Many will try to tell you that this one isn't really a trick shot, but rather a necessary move when the cue ball drifts into awkward positions. This is a lie. A behind the back shot can be whipped out in dozens of scenarios - whether it's needed or not. The secret to getting this one right is keeping both arms low, the same way you would with a normal shot. If you don't do this, it's easy to get beneath the ball and send it barreling off in the wrong direction. Head down to your local Kingpin for some practice.

2. Chip off the old block

Again, this is one that many will try to tell you has a functional purpose. While that's certainly true in rare situations, the chip is more commonly deployed when you're winning the game by miles and really want to assert your dominance over the opposition. While it may seem tempting to chip, remember that most pool halls will frown upon it, thanks to the move's propensity for tearing up felt and leaving nasty gashes in the playing surface. This is one to save for your table at home.

3. Off the wall

So if the chip is off limits, how can you get around an obstacle if none of your other balls are viable options? An off the wall shot may not be as flashy as the chip, but it serves a far more functional and realistic purpose. You'll need to have a good understanding of your pool angles, and that only comes with time. Once mastered though, nothing will be able to prevent you from pocketing your targets in short order and claiming victory.
